Is 42 inches the right TV height for every room?

No — 42" is the seated-living-room standard. In a bedroom, eye level is a little higher (about 46") because you watch propped up in bed. In standing spaces like game rooms and bars, center the screen closer to 60". Above a fireplace the mantel sets the height, not eye level.

As low as the mantel and heat clearance allow — usually 4 to 12 inches above the mantel. Every above-fireplace install trades a bit of neck comfort for the look, which is why we use heat-rated hardware and often recommend a pull-down mount that lowers the screen to eye level while you watch.
